Pre and Post Laser Care

  • Treatment Contraindications: 


    You are not a candidate if you are pregnant, breast feeding, have open sores in the treatment area, or if have been on isotretinoin
    (sometimes known as Accutane) in the past 6 months. 

    Laser Scheduling Reminders: 


    Laser Hair removal typically takes around 6-9+ treatments spaced out approximately every 4-6 weeks. 

    Inform us if you have a history of cold sores or herpes in the area treated (laser light can activate herpes infections). Be sure to
    take your medication for cold sores the morning of the appointment if you have a history of cold sores. You will need a
    prescription prior to the day of the appointment. 

    Inform us of any change in your health since the last visit (including pregnancy/breastfeeding).
    Pre-Treatment Care Instructions: 

    Do not wax, tweeze, color, bleach, use depilatory creams or have electrolysis on the treatment area for at least 4 weeks before and
    throughout the entire course of your treatments. Shaving and clipping is permitted as often as desired. 

    Shave treatment area 24hrs prior your scheduled treatment, unless instructed otherwise. If you cannot shave the area, our
    clinical staff will shave the area for an additional $25-$50 charge, depending on the surface area to be treated.

    Patients should not be tan for any laser or light procedures and should not have been exposed to the sun, tanning beds, or used
    self-action tanners for 2 weeks before the procedure. Tanning introduces an increased risk for pigmentation changes. Tanning
    after laser treatments is also discouraged for 2 weeks.

    Avoid neurotoxin injections (Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin, etc.) at least 1 week prior and 1 week after treatment, and avoid
    dermal fillers at least 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after treatment. 

    Arrive to your laser appointment without any jewelry, makeup, moisturizers, lipstick, or other skincare products at the anticipated
    treatment site if able.  

    Do not bring children to your appointment. Assistance is not available to watch them while procedures are being done. Hazardous
    chemicals and equipment are in the vicinity and could potentially cause harm.  

    Discontinue use of Retin-A, Renova, Differin, Tretinoin, Tazorac, glycolic acids, Vitamin C products, skin rejuvenating products, and
    any other potential irritants 2 days prior to treatment. 

    Notify us if you have tattoos or permanent makeup in the areas being treated, as the tattoos can be affected by laser light. 

  • Discomfort is minimal and should feel like a sunburn for approximately 2 hours post treatment.  Cool compresses may be used if necessary. 

    Avoid anti-inflammatory/NSAID medications.  Swelling is normal; sleep with your head elevated for 2 days post-treatment.  Sleep on your back, on a clean pillowcase  Clean treatment area with a mild, gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil, and clean hands twice a day. Gently pat dry with a clean, soft washcloth.  Reapply the occlusive ointment recommended by your clinician as needed to keep the skin moist until re-epithelialization has taken place. This generally occurs between day 3 and 5. At that time begin applying a gentle moisturizer 2-3 times a day to prevent skin from becoming dry. 

    Do not apply any other skincare products unless instructed by your provider. Do not scratch or pick at the healing skin. 

    Continue to avoid direct sun exposure for the next 4 weeks, for best results up to 6 months.Skin will be more sensitive to the sun. 

    You may begin to apply a Zinc/Titanium Dioxide based sunscreen once re-epithelialization has taken place. Reapply sunblock every 2 hours when outdoors.   Wear a 4-inch brimmed hat and sunglasses whenever possible. Remain diligent about keeping cell phones, dirty glasses or other potential contaminates away from tissue. 

    Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day  It is important to use any prescribed post treatment skincare products or medications as directed by your provider.

    You may resume makeup once skin has healed, typically between 5-7 days.  Avoid vigorous exercise for 1-week post-treatment.  It is important to use any prescribed post-treatment skincare products or medications as directed by your treatment provider.  Dark skin is more prone to hyperpigmentation.

    Notify your provider as soon as possible if you notice any areas on your skin are beginning to darken.

  • Cleanse the treated area twice daily with gentle soap and lukewarm water, pat area dry.  Apply gentle moisturizer 2-3 times a day as needed.  Avoid applying any active products such as retinol to the treatment site for 1 week.  Avoid activities that cause flushing or excessive perspiration including exercise, spicyfoods, alcohol consumption or hot temperatures for 2 days.  Avoid direct sun exposure for four weeks. Apply zinc-based sunblock daily and reapplyevery two hours when outdoors. Wear a 4-inch brim sun hat and sunglasses when possible.  Contact your provider if there is any indication of blistering or infection. 

  • Apply cold compress for discomfort. Consider over the counter pain medication for discomfort. Cleanse treated area at least once daily in the shower with gentle soap and water, pat area dry.  After cleansing, apply a thin layer of occlusive ointment and cover with a non-stick dressinguntil healed. Avoid submerging treated area in water until healed (shower is okay)  Do not pick, peel, or rub the treatment area throughout healing.  If blistering occurs, do not pop or pick at blisters. Keep the area moist with occlusiveointment and covered with non-stick dressing.  Once healed, avoid sun exposure to the treated area. Apply zinc-based sunblock daily andreapply every two hours when outdoors.  Contact provider if there is any indication of blistering or infection.
